The idea of Autotrist came from an observation of how a windshield cleared the rain inform a car’s window. It resembled a desperate girl crying or a painter feverishlypaintingto articulate profound feelings. While developing the idea, I also considered how machinery is so advanced it can create art on its own. That’s when the idea of the name of this work found me: Autotrist- automatic artist, together with the word “triste” – sad in Portuguese, which represents the initial inspiration for this work, tears.
To keep the watercolor flowing in a cycle, I attached an acrylic, rectangular box to the canvas with screws and put a submerged water pump inside it. I filled it with water and watercolor. I then attached a plastic tube tothe submerged pump and pierced the plastic so that water could fall on the canvas. I also explored the electric possibilities of kinetics.
